Ovarian diseases
Ovarian diseases are cancers or disorders of the ovaries.
Women have two ovaries that are responsible for releasing an egg each month and releasing several hormones. Some ovarian diseases or disorders include:
- endometriosis
- ovarian cysts
- ovarian epithelial cancer
- ovarian germ cell tumors
- ovarian low malignant potential tumors
- polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition in which tissues lining the uterus escape and grow outside of the uterus. It is very painful, and can cause infertility and other health problems.
Ovarian Cysts
It is common for many women to develop ovarian cysts in their lifetime. At times, they go unnoticed without pain or visible symptoms.
Ovarian epithelial cancer
Ovarian epithelial cancer is a common ovarian cancer that affects women worldwide. It develops on the outside of the ovaries and then spreads to other organs.
Ovarian germ cell tumors
Ovarian germ cell tumors grow on the outside of the ovary and are common among teenagers and young women.
Ovarian low malignant potential tumors
Low malignant potential means that these types of tumors will probably not turn into cancer that spreads. An ovarian low malignant potential tumor forms inside of the ovaries and gradually spreads to the outside of the ovary. This mostly affects younger women and also affects the ability to have children.
Polycystic ovary syndrome
This is a hormonal imbalance in women, where androgens ( male hormones) are higher than normal. Polycystic ovary syndrome can cause a variety of symptoms and problems.
